A late fashion update,

Spring/Summer 2009

What can I say that hasn't been said already about the recession and its affects on the runway. I mean, to be honest.. I was pretty disappointed with the collections this season because there wasn't anything really new and innovative--at least, not as much compared to other seasons. BUT, we also had this terrible economic downfall.. so, I guess that explains it. Does anyone else see a decline in the creativity of fashion designers nowadays? or I am just expecting too much..

Some highlights of the season (starting with New York Fashion Week):

Threeasfour - I think there's been some trouble among the three designers for Threeasfour.. but whatever, I think their creations are pretty cool. They had really crazy leggings/tights/pants for their looks, and I loved the way they look on bodies. Some of the pieces looked like topographical maps or something.

Rodarte - I have loved everything this collection has made, but this season was actually kind of disappointing. They continued their whole knits, very disassembled look, adding some chains and more of a punk rock, goth element to the looks. I thought it lacked creativity because it was so close to their Autumn/Winter '08 collection. But, the dresses at the end were breathtaking. The Mulleavy sisters have such a romantic and fantasy-like aesthetic.

Koi Suwannagate - She's someone I've been watching ever since her first and very recent collection, and I always adore what she creates. I have to satisfy the little girl within me that loves the flowery, girly colors and shapes, and her clothes always seem like they were made for beautiful woodland fairies or something. I wasn't a fan of the butterflies, but she has a way of making her clothes look like they came from an enchanted place far, far away.

Jonathan Saunders - Ever since he started showing collections, I have loved everything he's put out. He always uses such beautiful, popping, contrasting colors, and his stuff is usually more like the dress on the bottom row most right - symmetric, very sharp in his lines.. but he was a bit more experimental this season I think. I'm loving the shiny, iridescent (is that a word?) skirts, but he kind of went overboard on the short skirt/dress look.. almost every look was short. But hey, what the heck, it's spring.

Calvin Klein - Ever since Francisco Costa started designing for Calvin Klein, I feel like things got a lot better for this brand. I'm not a huge fan of minimalism, but I really like what he does with shape and color.. it's simple and subtle, but there still seems like a lot of workmanship and thought put into his pieces. The collection felt kind of geometric yet fluid at the same time.. cool stuff. And even though most of his pieces are the same color, it doesn't seem overdone. How does he do that?

Philip Lim - always a pleasure to see what he comes up with! I loved his color palette - he's always subtle and smooth with his colors, never over the top. I love the wavy thing he did on some pieces - I have no idea how he gets the fabric to do that, but it's beautiful. This collection seems a bit more exciting than the others.. I think he's always practical, but he's added some flare to this season.

Okay, I gotta do homework now ahhhh

I've been meaning to..

update.

I was going to put up a post about every collection that I looked at, but then some stuff came up with my computer..but praise God, it's all going to be fine. If it weren't for Applecare and an awesome friend/mentor, I would be trying to get a new Macbook.. no, scratch that, a refurbished Macbook half the price but way less than half of the storage space (try 50GB?).
And thanks to the Apple store and Tekserve who told me I would need to repair this for a friendly cost of $850-$1240. They both told me I might as well get a new laptop.. so much for technical support.

Alas, I have not the time nor the spring/summer 2009 collections saved in my fashion archive of online photos, so I came up with a new idea: magazine reviews! Seeing as I am the worst budgeter of my money, I continue to purchase new magazines every..week or so? Sometimes I have to hide them from my friends for fear of them yelling at me..hehe don't tell them.

Theme: Only my second time reading it, but I am falling in love. A magazine with a predominantly Asian/Asian-American staff and focuses on mostly Asian/Asian-American artists. This two-week's cover girl is Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead, an alternative band.
This issue is also focusing on women, woohoo!

Someone else they're featuring is renowned Nian Fish, the creative consultant of KCD which produces major fashion shows!! It's interesting to read what she does like put the whole team of stylists, hair dressers, make-up artists, etc. together to make the fashion show what it is today. She's also a stylist and filmmaker; talk about awesome.

Oh, British Vogue. You hurt my wallet, but it's like a masochistic kind. You're better than American Vogue anyway.
Unfortunately, not much access to the contents except through the site: www.vogue.co.uk
Is it weird that I want to save all these magazines for my children?
What is cool about their site is that you can check out their cover archive and see all their covers in the past! It's so cool to see ones from the 40s and 50s. I'd chop all my hair off (which I've been diligently growing out since July) to go back to that time and the fashions.

Not really a fan of In Style..but I have it 'cause I got it free from my internship. That's one of the sweet things about working there, I get a bunch of magazines for freeee (I especially like the obscure ones that I don't see or buy too often like Fader, Antennae, CITY, etc). Plus, Meg Ryan is.. well, she's Meg Ryan. And that's about it for this month's issue. Although I was surprised to see a Yohji Yamamoto white button-down on their "Key Pieces" article.

Some more later,,
